Chinese Drywall Recall

A drywall recall effort by consumer watchdog groups, with lawyers in Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana at their side, is pushing for remediation of the Chinese drywall that was heavily used in home construction in the years 2004 through 2007. The product was used here due to the housing boom and in post-hurricane construction during that time.

These groups are calling for federal toxic fund relief-like programs to help rebuild more than 100,000 residences believed contaminated by the product. A Mississippi drywall recall, as with a recall anywhere, would involve removing all drywall and possibly all wiring and plumbing in homes where the sulfur-emitting wallboards were used.

For good reason, given the material and human health damages believed caused by Mississippi Chinese drywall, recall is only the beginning of what manufacturers, distributors and builders are responsible for:

  • Upper respiratory issues, nose bleeds, severe headaches and rashes that affect persons living with the Chinese drywall, and perhaps drywall laborers who installed it
  • Possible longer term damage to the central nervous system (including visual and sensory changes), the cardiovascular system, eyes, kidneys, liver and skin
  • Home damage, air conditioning unit failures, corrosion to copper, silver and other metals; there have been also been reports of jewelry being affected
  • Light bulb or electric device failure, indication of corroded wiring behind walls and problems with large and small appliances

Dangerous particulates are a solid reason for drywall recall

Ominously, dangerous particulates from Chinese drywall may invade and adhere to other building materials in the structure and personal objects within the home. If this is found to be the case, complete disposal of household contents and possible demolition of the home itself may be necessary.

A drywall recall in Mississippi would set the wheels in motion to get your home fixed. However, the high cost of doing that will undoubtedly require solid legal representation of homeowners and residents.

Note that a Mississippi dry wall recall would not negate your ability to seek compensation for damages to your health, which may not be evident or scientifically documented for many years. By engaging an experienced law firm familiar with personal and products injury cases that are due to manufacturing mistakes (such as toxic mold, another drywall problem that preceded Chinese drywall), you will receive counsel from attorneys who understand the science and law around such situations.
